<p>Portion sizes have gotten out of control today.  If you look at your grandmother’s china dishes, most of the main dish plates would be the size of our dessert plates today.  Being able to conquer portion control is a crucial step in the right direction when trying to reach optimal health.</p>
<p>I have come up with “the nine-inch plate system.”  To make this system effective, obviously you would need to own nine-inch plates.  Because the plates are smaller, it will cause you to put less food on your plate, thus helping you control the portion size of your meal.  It isn’t just the size of the plate that is important though.  It is mainly what you put on the plate that makes the difference.  My system is designed to help you eat the way that research has shown is the most healthy and effective way to lose weight and keep it off.</p>
<p>The plate should be divided into three categories.  The first, which is fruits and vegetables, should consist of 50% of the plate.  Second is carbohydrates or starches, and it should consist of 25% of the plate.  The last category is proteins and it should consist of 25% of the total plate.  By making your meals ideally proportioned, you will be able to reach optimal health in no time.</p>
<p>As mentioned earlier, portion control is a major component to optimal health. Once you can learn to control your portions, through this “nine-inch plate system,” you will learn to master other aspects of the <em>Habits of Health </em>and be right on track to reach the goal of optimal health.</p>

<p><a href="http://slimpossible.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/wayne.jpg"><img class="size-medium wp-image-73 alignright" style="border:2px solid black;margin:3px;" src="http://slimpossible.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/wayne.jpg?w=125&#038;h=148" alt="" width="125" height="148" /></a>Close to 100,000 people die each year as a result of prescription medications.  Medicines have side effects that manifest over time.  When people get on meds too long, they have adverse effects on the internal organs.  All of the organs are exposed to the medicine, not just certain ones.</p>
<p>No medication ever created health.  The decision to create optimal health really is the first step.  You need to focus on what you want, and the key is optimal health.  My book, “Habits of Health,” is about reaching optimal health.</p>
<p>Focus on what you want and focus on something long term. This is what my book is about: a step-by-step process to getting off medications. Visceral adiposity is the belly around our middle, and it is something that causes a lot of the problems.   This deep belly fat affects cholesterol levels, causes blood sugar to go up many more terrible things.  Get rid of your belly fat.  I am a firm believer in using the portion-controlled meal replacements. Eat every three hours and you’ll start losing weight quickly.</p>
<p>If someone were to ask me: “How do I get off the medications I am taking?” I would respond by asking them, “What is it you really want?”  85% percent of diseases are nutritionally induced and 1/3 of the population has belly fat.  Get rid of belly fat, then get off meds. Develop a more active lifestyle.  In the book you can learn how to create a more active life.  It’s the small choices you make daily that will help you have more overall energy.</p>
<p>I am not advocating for people to stop taking their current medications.  However, I am advocating you begin that path towards optimal health so you don’t have to rely on those medications. A lot of that may be correct when they say they need certain medications, but medicines are a reaction to a symptom that occurs inside your body because you have a disease or are sick. My experience is that once you can get off of them the body will be able to heal itself so it does not need the medications. Once you begin a healthy eating program and gain a healthier lifestyle, you will need to change the doses of medicine because your body will be at a different point in its progress toward optimal health.  The goal is to you turn off your insulin pump and control your energy intake.  Blood sugar comes down naturally, and as you get closer to optimal health, your need for medications will become lower and lower until you don’t need the medications.</p>

I  researched and thought about this program for a couple of months before starting  and now my only regret is that I didn’t start sooner. I have fought a weight  problem most of my married life and tried many diets only to lose and gain back  all of the weight and usually more.  I love having six meals a day! By the  time I get a little hungry (which doesn’t even happen much anymore), I look at  the clock and realize its about time for another meal. I really like the  Medifast meals. The bars and shakes totally satisfy my sweet tooth. The greatest  news is that I have dropped 27 pounds!! It feels so good!! I have looked ahead  to Medifast’s transition and maintenance program and I’m very positive about  that also. I don’t want to do anymore losing and gaining weight back. <p>Cravings are usually dramatically reduced, if not removed altogether, once somebody is up and running on the weight loss program.  But, for those occasions when they hit, it&#8217;s useful to have some techniques to fall back on.  This video goes over the three techniques that I have found to be particularly helpful.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I had the chance to go to some great training a couple of weeks ago as an Independent Health Advisor for Take Shape for Life.  I learned something that has already proved to be very valuable in my own weight loss journey.</p>
<p>It is recommended, while you are on the Phase One &#8220;5 &amp; 1 Plan&#8221;, to have at least 2 shakes a day.  I guess I&#8217;d never given much thought to the &#8220;at least&#8221; part of that recommendation.  It was explained to me at this training that the shakes really are the heart of the program.  When Medifast started out years ago, it was only shakes.  Thank goodness they&#8217;ve gone on to develop over 60 meals now to break the boredom of just shakes all the time!   But the shakes really are the center of the program.</p>
<p>They recommended that if we had clients that were stalled out on their weight loss, to try simply having more shakes for their meals during their day, and maybe even eliminating the daily bar for a week or so, just to vary things enough to break something loose.  I decided to take the advice myself to see what kind of effect it would have.   For the last few weeks, I&#8217;ve tried having four shakes a day, one bar, and then my lean and green.  The results have been very promising!  I had been at a plateau for a little while now, and this really served to bust through it.  And what&#8217;s more, I still wasn&#8217;t hungry like I thought I would be having so many shakes.</p>
<p>So, while I don&#8217;t recommend doing all shakes all the time &#8211; the food boredom would probably sabotage your program &#8211; I do recommend increasing the number of shakes for a while if you&#8217;ve stalled out a little bit.</p>
