Portion sizes have gotten out of control today. If you look at your grandmother’s china dishes, most of the main dish plates would be the size of our dessert plates today. Being able to conquer portion control is a crucial step in the right direction when trying to reach optimal health.
I have come up with “the nine-inch plate system.” To make this system effective, obviously you would need to own nine-inch plates. Because the plates are smaller, it will cause you to put less food on your plate, thus helping you control the portion size of your meal. It isn’t just the size of the plate that is important though. It is mainly what you put on the plate that makes the difference. My system is designed to help you eat the way that research has shown is the most healthy and effective way to lose weight and keep it off.
The plate should be divided into three categories. The first, which is fruits and vegetables, should consist of 50% of the plate. Second is carbohydrates or starches, and it should consist of 25% of the plate. The last category is proteins and it should consist of 25% of the total plate. By making your meals ideally proportioned, you will be able to reach optimal health in no time.
As mentioned earlier, portion control is a major component to optimal health. Once you can learn to control your portions, through this “nine-inch plate system,” you will learn to master other aspects of the Habits of Health and be right on track to reach the goal of optimal health.

What a great idea! I’m going to throw out my old plates and buy some 9 inch plates right now.Why is it that American portions have gotten so out of control in the first place? If you go to any fast food restaurant in Canada, the large drinks are the same size as American small drink cups. Why are they trying to keep us fed, fat, and complacent? It makes you wonder…
